The Odd Physics of Rey’s Backflip in Star Wars: Episode IX

The vertical acceleration. On Earth, this is -9.8 m/s2. The distance scale. How many pixels of video in one meter of distance? The time scale. What is the length of time for each frame? If you know two of these three things, you can find the third. Here you can see there is a problem. I'm pretty sure I can get a distance scale by using the height of Rey (or the size of the TIE fighter). But what about the other two? It seems I should stay away from…

Every Holiday Caroline Eriksson Makes Something Crazy Out of Gingerbread

Artwork by Caroline Eriksson Every Christmas, artist Caroline Eriksson has made something amazing out of gingerbread. It started back in 2013 when she made an Optimus Prime for a gingerbread contest. Since then she’s made a Xenomorph, dragon and even Darth Vader! To create her gingerbread sculptures, Eriksson first builds an internal structure out of metal. The rest is simply gingerbread and melted sugar! For the curved areas, Eriksson says the pieces are soft and malleable if applied fresh out the oven. She also mentions that she adjusts her recipe…

Star Wars and the Battle of the Ever-More-Toxic Fan Culture

Three Tenets of Nerd: 1. A nerd must not harm another nerd, or through inaction allow a nerd to come to harm. 2. Nerds must cooperate with other nerds, except where such cooperation would violate the previous tenet. 3. Nerds must protect the existence of nerddom, except where such protection violates the first two tenets. So, I was at Comic-Con International in San Diego in 2008, the year of Twilight and True Blood. I’d never heard of either then—a blind spot, I admit—but that year something changed. Women have always…

Solo: A Star Wars Story review Han Solo origins film is boisterous bromance

Alden Ehrenreich ably apes Harrison Ford in this straightforwardly rollicking adventure, which betrays little trace of its troubled production Solo: A Star Wars Story is a crackingly enjoyable adventure which frankly deserves full episode status in the great franchise, not just one of these intermittent place-holding iterations. And Han also chances across a charismatic dandy-ish smuggler, gambler and flier called Lando Calrissian, a very funny performance from Donald Glover. It is Lando who is the owner of the Millennium Falcon, but sporting man that he is, Lando is willing to…

And now, I am going to complain about some physics in Star Wars: The Last Jedi even though I said you shouldn't. But first, let me give you a couple of examples of bad physics that doesn't bother me. Consider an x-wing fighter flying near the Death Star. When the x-wing makes a…
