Top three birds all backed by more than 10,000 votes in Guardian Australia and BirdLife Australia poll that attracted 150,000 votes The Australian magpie has been crowned Australian bird of the year for 2017, upsetting the early favourite, the white ibis, and winning 13.3% of the vote. On a train from Orlando to Miami, a passenger took this surreal slo mo video on his iPhone 8 (at 1080p and 240 fps) of passing birds at Florida’s Turnpike. On the remote glacial lagoons of Patagonia, the critically endangered Hooded Grebe (Podiceps gallardoi) performs a mesmerizing mating dance that has been caught on film for the very first time. The species was only discovered by humans 43 years ago, but have become critically endangered ever since a few American Minks (Neovison vison)—who were introduced to Patagonia for commercial fur production in the 30s—escaped and wreaked havoc on the ill-prepared birds.
