Rose McGowan isn’t done
The opening sentence of the complaint reflects the plight of McGowan and every other victim who has come forward throughout the #MeToo movement the Weinstein allegations galvanized two years ago. It states:
“This case is about a diabolical and illegal effort by one of America’s most powerful men and his representatives to silence sexual-assault victims… and it is about the courageous women and journalists who persisted to reveal the truth.”
What is the truth, exactly? Well, McGowan claims Weinstein and his team tried to steal her unpublished book after learning she was planning to describe in detail the alleged 1997 rape.
She alleges Weinstein attempted to buy her silence — and that when she refused, he launched a smear campaign so no one would believe her. She claims this campaign included planting drugs on her.
McGowan also claims she was secretly recorded by a Black Cube official who was posing as someone interested in hiring her to speak on women’s issues at public events. This operative allegedly collected hours of conversations, including parts of Rose’s unpublished book being read aloud.
Weinstein’s lawyer responded to the complaint by calling McGown “a publicity seeker looking for money,” telling The Hollywood Reporter in a statement:
“Once an for all, Rose McGowan will be shown to be what she is; a publicity seeker looking for money. From the moment she sought a multi-million dollar payout in return for not making these baseless allegations, which we rejected, we knew that she was waiting for an opportune time to begin this. We will demonstrate that this case has no legal merit.”
According to THR, records show McGowan asked for $6 million to settle.
Bloom addressed her inclusion in the lawsuit via a statement from her attorney Eric Geroge, telling THR:
“It is inexcusable that Ms. McGowan chose to include my client in her lawsuit. Facts matter. There is simply no credible factual or legal basis for her claims against my client. We look forward to our day in court to set the record straight.”
Sounds like Rose still has a big battle ahead of her.
